Tim Arends’ Rules for Comedy Magic

  1. Be funny.

  2. Don't take yourself too seriously, and don't be afraid to make a fool of yourself.

  3. Never, ever embarrass an audience member or volunteer.

  4. Roll with the punches, and be able to adapt your act to every situation.

  5. If a volunteer is funny, don't be afraid to put the spotlight on him!

  6. Keep everything in perspective. Remember: you're not curing cancer or bringing about world peace; you're entertaining people.

  7. No blue material. If you work clean, you can work anywhere.

  8. Remember that magic is an inherently humorous. When you do something that defies the laws of nature, that the audience knows shouldn't happen but does anyway, it's funny!

  9. Remember that not everybody likes to be fooled, but everybody likes to laugh!

  10. If all else fails, pull a lion or crocodile out of your hat!
